skincare products question...slightly OT

ok so this isn't exactly about queer eye although i will email them on the subject and pray for a response.

Here is my dilemma. i am under the opinion that nice but affordable skin care product like the line that Nutrogena has is just as good for your skin as any of the really expensive products out there. I noticed how much my girlfriend pays for Shiseido products (like $40 for a small bottle, minimum). Is there something in their products that really justifies that cost?

I noticed Shiseido has a new line for men too and i have to admit that part of me is disturbed by the idea of getting ripped off just for a brand name but the other part of me would love to enjoy the fun of shopping for an effective line of skin care products, cost issues aside.

any opinions?

I just successfully defended my Master's thesis at CU. It was an audience study of Queer Eye...pretty good stuff--that I got from my students. They answered a survey about their feelings about the show and some of the answers were pretty crazy. But it was fun. And now it is over!! Whew!!

All of the guys are amazing, but if I had to choose for first dibs... it would definitely be Ted!!! He's sexy and fit as hell, men in glasses are hot, he's an intellectual, and he's an expert in taste. Mmmmmm, my life would be complete if I could come home from work to find him in my kitchen, wearing nothing but his glasses, an apron, and a smile. And then of course, he wasn't gay and had me for dinner. :)

Queer Eye for the Straight Girl--thoughts?

I've seen the first two episodes, and so far I think it's pretty good.

I don't think the opening animated sequence or musical theme are quite so 100% right-on as those for the original, but otherwise I think the show's off to a good start. I was a little concerned that the roles of the Gal Pals, having more overlap and redundancy than those of the Fab Five, would lead to some confusion, but so far it's been managed pretty well. I was especially wondering about Honey Labrador's role, as it seemed especially redundant given what the other three were carrying, but it turns out she's more than capable of holding her own.

All four of the Gal Pals are pretty entertaining and appealing, but I confess that Honey's definitely got most of my attention. Especially in the second episode when she was running around in that tank top--women with pectoral muscle definition, yum! :-)

Queer Eye UK Edition

It was definitely entertaining to see an episode of the UK edition of Queer Eye. But I have to say, even though the British Fab Five seemed quite nice and lively, in comparison to our US originals they seems positively sedate. They don't seem to have any one member with a gift for high-frequency quippage like Carson--or Ted or Thom, for that matter. And there also seems to be a "whole greater than sum of parts" level of group wackiness that our US team achieves on a regular basis, that wasn't in evidence with the Brits. Okay, a couple of them did have a nice puppy-pile in the kids' toys with attendant joking about "Queer-terestrial," that was pretty fun. But still ...

Oh yeah, and they sure didn't give the Brit food-and-beverage guy a whole helluva lot to do in that episode in terms of actual consumables-preparation.

Hello all, I just wanted to jump right in and say howdy and introduce myself - I'm Renee and I freely admit to being a Queer Eye addict.

Okay, that outta the way, I just watched the rerun of swanky comedian guy and I have to say...ew...ewewewew!!!

They fab five did an AMAZING job here, given what they had to work with (both him and the hazmat home he was in!), but the guy and his lifestyle was just so farking ew to me.

I was totally shocked that his girlfriend would agree to marry him, given she's refused to go in his apartment because of how he lives! I understand he looks better and the place is swanky-whatever now, but that certainly doesn't change who/what he obviously is. He's a guy who would live like he did before!!! I give him 2 weeks before the place is a bacteria breeding ground again and she's gonna marry him and then be all shocked when his piles of retro-trash starts stacking up in her place!

Just my petty two cents there.

LOVED the makeover and I really dig how the guys personalize each one to the specific interests of their straight guy. It was great. I hope they got hazard pay for working in that place!

Thoughts on the pilot episode?

So--Bravo broadcast the pilot episode this week. What did y'all think? I'm probably not going to have time for a more detailed post until this weekend at least, but the short version is: I found it way interesting, and the three pilot Fab Ones who didn't make it into the series were quite interesting, but I can see why the producers decided to move on to Kyan, Thom, and Jai because they do seem to have a bunch more on-camera charisma than the guys they replaced. Plus Kyan, Thom, and Jai do a better job of keeping up with Carson's high rate of quippage.

Mark Fa. - Mullet Mincemeat

(Sorry I've been derelict. Blame school.)

So how many here saw this, saw Mark and instantly thought he would've been a great extra in "Firefly"? C'mon, I loved his look. He should've played it up, though. Nice cowboy hat, string tie, pair of Lucchese boots.

And I have to confess that I sport a mullet. OK listen, I'm a middle-aged dyke and no TV show has offered to buy ME stainless steel industrial appliances. If and when they ever do, I promise to cut it. Into what, I don't know. Even my wife says I'm far too genderqueer for any other options, and this is a woman who is offended when I call her "dude."

Ah well, onwards:

1. Jai: B. Good to see him running around with the Fab 5 more and doing more stuff, but what was that rock climbing interlude about? That was just weird. Then again, the metrosexual party bags and the Kate Spade purse give him three snaps up. B

2. Carson: B+. Suede, mmmmm. Did you know that he is a champion horse rider? So much for stereotypes about nelly queens. This one's got some steel in him. The chunky sweater/jacket combo was bleah, but the rest of his stuff is so right-on that it worked great. B+

3. Ted: Pizza was a great idea. Simple, fun and do-able. And bonus points for going to Costco. Working Class uber alles! A-

4. Kyan: Kyan, touch my mullet and it's your balls. That being said, I gotta admit Mark looked pretty fucking hot after Kyan had his way with him. B+

5. Thom: What can't this guy do?! Then again, with a budget like his, sheesh. I have to be tougher on this guy otherwise he keeps getting nothing but straight A's. OK, the kitchen colors WERE too dark for me, even with the stainless brightening it up. What does he have against white touches? B+

Straight Guy Mark: From Wyatt Earp to a young Tommy Lee Jones in one swell foop. He was cute, sweet, aching for change and besides, his wife has a T-shirt that says "I don't like fags. I LOVE THEM!" Drafting his best friend to do his work was evil genius, frankly. I can cut him slack for that. His dedication to his stepdaughter was just heartwarming. Sniff. Stupid allergies. A+

Overall: Daughter gets an Ipod, a flat screen, an Apple G4 powerbook. Roe gets a new kitchen with stainless steel appliances. Mark gets to dress somewhere other than his basement, which is lovely, but he also suffered through countless mullet jokes. Ah, the poor, downtrodden short-long...

Funniest (oddly, unintentional) Line: Ted: So we're going to Costco to get all the ingredients for the party. They've got trampolines, they've got plasma TVs, they've got tube socks. They've got the best tube socks.

I'm new to this tribe, but I LOVE this show. I think I'm borderline fanatic about it.

One of my favorite lines (Carson) "Crouching tiger, hidden drag queen" Teeheehee!!!

Here are two of my favorites -

Carson says to a crying Jai, "Oh your hair doesn't look THAT bad"

And, of course, "zucchini!"

John Z.-- a *straight* figure skater?

The brief "dyke eye for the Fab guys" report card:

1. Jai-- finally glad to see him get more action than "these are tickets to a Broadway show." Nice touch having him talk about modern art. The "warm the towels in the dryer thing" though-- duh. I think hunky skater guy is way beyond "warm towel 101." C+

2. Carson-- Didn't much like the sweaters or the cap, but the cashmere long coat, tux shirt and army pants looked great on hunky skater boy. Cashmere, mmmm.... B+

3. Ted-- At first I was WTF? Ravioli?! That's not an easy thing to do. But hunky skater boy managed to do it, even after the pasta machine fuck-up. B

4. Kyan-- Nice to see that he doesn't ALWAYS hate long hair on guys. Pedicure and hot bath, mmmm. Great way to get hunky skater boy to take care of his claws, er, toes. A-

5. Thom-- Is there NOTHING this man can't do? Cripes. The living room looked fabulous, the curtains in the dining room softened things up *perfectly*. But the river pebbles on the pink-ish bathtub ledge knock him down a half-grade, though. Those just looked like someone broke a tropical aquarium near the faucet. A-

Straight Hunky Skater Boy: He was obviously comfy with the queer guys. I'd imagine he's got plenty of gay male friends in the business. Plus, this guy is incredibly romantic, isn't he? The impromptu comment about culture and food to his wife sealed the deal. Even *my* wife and I were all "awww!" and teary watching him romance his wife. A+ subject.

The PC Police Strike Back: I like that most of the straight guys come off as really sensitive, loving human beings and not some "dumb guy" stereotype. I wish they'd mention things like the fact that Ted's been in a committed relationship himself for six years. Right now we could use some "I can relate to your marital stuff because me and my partner blah blah blah..." given the latest gay marriage stuff. I do know that these are taped well in advance, but maybe they'll pick up the politics a bit in next year's eps otherwise it just come off as the 21st century version of happy servants helping the privileged folk.

So what did y'all think of the show?

The next installment of "dyke eye for the Fab guys" report card:

Jai-- Further Good Jai Use and the scene at Caroline's and coffee with Mentor Man gives him an A-. But he's down a whole point YET AGAIN for dumbing down his advice. "Make the proposal special..." um, OK. I mean, it isn't like these guys are gonna sit on the pot and yell "Hon, we're out of toilet paper! Marry me!" I think even the densest neanderthal has a clue that if he really wants to get married, he'd better be on his best behavior when asking. B-

Carson-- Good use of mixing retro with new clothes. And I've gotta give the guy an A just for dealing with that closet mess. Ack. A

Ted-- Toast points, creme fraiche, good champagne, elegant and simple. It's funny how joking about "fruityness" gets the straight boys all nervous. Liberal guilt, gotta love it. 1/2 point down for saying how much "women love pink wine." Fuck you, dude. Brut de bruts for me, buster. A-

Kyan-- Geez, I wonder how smart it is to give an OCP way too many hair products? And dude, beards are not bad things. Comedy Boy had no chin; you should have let him keep the nasty goatee. Even after praising the long hair look last time, I gotta say that this time the long hair didn't look all that great. C- Kyan, kyan, kyan, you're better than this.

Thom-- Goddamn, he comes through for me again. Manages to make the place look both comfortable AND loungy. He really worked with what Comedy Boy had, and the retro wallpaper looked fantastic. A-

Comedy Boy: Hey, I thought his jokes were actually pretty funny: "I knew I was in trouble when I ejaculated on my date's prom dress. I knew I was in even more trouble when she caught me in her closet after that." Bonus points for use of Polish. Points off for getting himself in that state in the first place. Good god. B+

Best Hip Tip Moment: Jai-- "You don't have to have a special occasion to celebrate with your partner. (flips open box, reveals cute puppy) Make one up!" My Dear Wife-- "All right! National Unwanted New Pet Day!"

Funniest line: "Matilda Downey Jr. Sounds like a drag queen with a drug problem." -- Carson

So what did you guys think of the 80's rocker guy they redid? I thought it was pretty amazing. Beforehand, I thought he was kinda icky. Then I found myself thinking he was semi-hot. Haha.
