ok so this isn't exactly about queer eye although i will email them on the subject and pray for a response.
Here is my dilemma. i am under the opinion that nice but affordable skin care product like the line that Nutrogena has is just as good for your skin as any of the really expensive products out there. I noticed how much my girlfriend pays for Shiseido products (like $40 for a small bottle, minimum). Is there something in their products that really justifies that cost?
I noticed Shiseido has a new line for men too and i have to admit that part of me is disturbed by the idea of getting ripped off just for a brand name but the other part of me would love to enjoy the fun of shopping for an effective line of skin care products, cost issues aside.
any opinions?

Re: skincare products question...slightly OT
Sat, February 5, 2005 - 6:12 PMI myself, just can't justify spending that much on skin care. Especially since Nivea and numerous other brand names have "for men" lines.

Re: skincare products question...slightly OT
Mon, February 7, 2005 - 1:36 PMNeutrogena is certainly a good line of products. (They make the only sensitive-skin sun screen I can use without getting a rash.) I think the main thing for guys is to do *some* skin care rather than no skin care (the situation of so many of the Fab Five's subjects), and beyond that, to choose a decent product line rather than a generic whatever's-on-sale line.
Having said that, a lot of the higher-end skin care lines, such as are carried in department stores and specialty shops, are really excellent. Also remember that it's not just the quality (and price tag) of the brand, but how it gets along with your unique skin and metabolism. You may find that a number of brands work okay for you, or you may find there's one or two that really solve some specific issue that makes them worth whatever price is charged.
The manufacturers of the fancier stuff do know that the price leap from drugstore brands to their stuff can be daunting, so they often runs specials--often packages of a few different products together, sometimes with smaller sample sizes of the products, sometimes with full-scale sizes. And they do in-store product demos. Both of these are ways to dabble in the product for a lower price (or free for the demo), to see if you find the product worth the extra price. Or, I know people who just wait for those specials and load up on stuff then... :-) -

Mon, February 7, 2005 - 11:48 PMI buy all my skin care products at the 99 cents store here in Hollywood, alot of them are the brands names and some are off names, but they all work for me, so no you don't have to pay big bucks to have great skin care!!

Re: skincare products question...slightly OT
Mon, February 21, 2005 - 12:27 AMMy skin must not be in too bad a condition, as people often think I'm significantly younger than I am. What I do is simply wash my face in the shower with plain water, no soap. Thus, the natural oils remain on/in my skin.
I also try to keep my face out of the sun as much as possible. That's the #1 thing that can ruin skin. If I go to the beach or whatever, I always try to turn my back on the sun, keep my face in the shade, etc.

Wed, February 23, 2005 - 8:39 PMI remember when one of the straight guys told Kyan that he washed his face in just plain hot water, Kyan looked horrified! -

Re: skincare products question...slightly OT
Mon, March 21, 2005 - 6:27 PMWe're taught as Good Americans that we're not good enough as-is. I'd throw out all the skin and hair care products if I could because these are the prime factors that cause skin aging:
(1) Too much sun
(2) Not enough oil in the diet
(3) Stress
(4) A negative outlook on life.
(5) Thinking old.
That's my take on it, anyway. -

Sun, May 8, 2005 - 12:44 PMOh, and I'll add one more thing that keeps one's skin looking good: drink a glass or two of water before going to bed.
It works for me.

Re: skincare products question...slightly OT
Sat, September 10, 2005 - 3:09 PMCool, thanks for all the info guys and gals.
so far I'm sticking with Nutrogena facial soap once a night and on occasion I use their facial moisturizer with sun-block. I also use some of that exfoliating scrub by St.Ives about once a week.
I might try the Shisedo stuff for fun someday but since my skin looks good their probably isn't much of a point to it...but I could use their product then fill the cool looking bottles with my Nutrogena stuff heheh
I'm still trying to get my girl to try the Nutrogena stuff especially since she stopped breaking out after cutting the Shisedo facial moisturizer out of her routine. They have a lot of products that look just like clear oil to me and I usually don't trust anything greasy.
